What to Expect

1. Membership Application

(If you already have a membership with UEC, skip step 1 and move to step 2. Service Request Form)

  • Complete the membership application with UEC.
  • Pay the one-time $100 membership fee. This can be paid upfront or in $20 monthly installments plus a one-time $5 finance charge.
  • A $200 deposit is typically required for new residential services.
  • This requirement may be waived if you provide satisfactory evidence of prompt payment history for the previous 12 months from your prior electric service provider.
  • If a member does not want to pay the security deposit or can’t provide a satisfactory payment history, they may opt into the prepay program.
  • If you’re only looking for an estimate, you may skip step 1. If you decide to proceed with the project, we will provide you with the necessary steps at that time.

2. Service Request Form

  • All new services or service requests should be initiated through the  New Service / Upgrade Request Form online.
  • A UEC representative will contact you to coordinate the details of the service and provide you with an estimate.

3. Service Point and Disconnects

  • UEC will determine the service point location in coordination with you, considering safety, cost, and convenience.
  • An outside disconnect is required at each service point.
  • When two or more meters are installed at a building, each meter mounting shall be permanently and legibly marked to indicate the service being metered.
  • Services that are upgraded, moved, or modified will generally require an outside disconnect, unless waived by UEC.

4. Easements and Rights-of-Way

  • Sometimes, a new service or line extension will require an easement.  UEC will let you know if an easement is necessary and can help coordinate surveying and document preparation.
  • Costs related to establishing easements for new or upgraded services are the responsibility of the member.

5. Electrical Inspection

  • The State of Idaho requires that services pass a State electrical inspection before the service is energized.
  • You are responsible for obtaining the appropriate permit and scheduling required inspections.
  • Electrical permits are obtained from the Idaho Division of Occupational and Professional Licences, or if you are within Burley city limits, from the City Building Department.
  • To pass your electrical inspection, you will need to ensure that all electrical wiring and equipment comply with federal, state, and local government requirements.
  • You will need to provide proof of a successful electrical inspection from the proper jurisdiction in accordance with Idaho state laws before interconnection.
  • Note: Services de-energized for one year or more will require proof of electrical inspection before reconnection.

6. Construction and Installation

  • UEC will provide electric facilities to the public right-of-way adjacent to your property.
  • You are responsible for the costs associated with extending facilities from the public right-of-way to the service point, as determined by UEC.
  • A written agreement will be entered into for all construction costs.
  • You may provide trenching and backfill per UEC specifications.
  • Member-owned equipment shall not be on UEC-owned equipment.
  • Member disconnects need to be installed and inspected before UEC crews install the service.
