Celebrate National Co-Op Month
Dear Members of United Electric Co-op,
There are many things to look forward to in the month of October in Southern Idaho, including the continued harvest of crops, Halloween, fall colors, and enjoying the great outdoors. Did you know October is also National Cooperative Month?
The cooperative business model is unique. Unlike many businesses that answer to outside investors or shareholders, cooperatives are built for their members. Being locally owned means we have the flexibility to focus on what matters most to the communities we serve. Each October, cooperatives are recognized for many qualities, celebrating their vital role in local economies and contributing to opportunities that serve their members.
There are cooperatives all around us. Many credit unions, stores, agricultural companies, restaurants, and utilities are based on the cooperative business model. In the United States, electric cooperatives provide power to more than 23 million homes, businesses, schools, and farms in 48 states. United Electric believes in and follows the 7 Cooperative Principles that set cooperatives apart from other business models. These include Voluntary and Open Membership; Democratic Member Control; Member Economic Participation; Autonomy and Independence; Education, Training and Information; Cooperation Among Cooperatives; and Concern for Community. These guiding principles ensure the organization continues to carry out its mission on behalf of United Electric’s members.
Some of the most important aspects of cooperative membership include a commitment to supporting the communities served and improving quality of life. In addition to the many benefits and services that come from cooperative membership, a value the cooperative business model may provide is the return of margins—or profits—back to members in the form of capital credits.
More than 900 electric cooperatives in America serve more than 42 million people with electricity, but you’ll also find the co-op difference in the little things. It’s the lineworkers restoring power after a storm. Employees answering your questions when you call. Team members volunteering at community events. Board members—your neighbors—who help guide decisions for the future.
We’re your local energy partner, and we’re committed to serving our communities for generations to come. United Electric is proud to be your power cooperative and to serve local merchants, families, farmers, and ranchers. We look forward to our continued role in sustaining the Mini-Cassia communities.
Sincerely,
General Manager Michael Darrington
