811 is a national phone number members can call to get help locating power lines before they start projects that require digging. This includes common tasks, such as planting trees and shrubs or installing fences and mailboxes.

After you call, the location of buried utilities will be marked with paint or flags so you or your contractor do not dig into underground power lines.

What Do I Call 811?

Call at least 2 business days before you plan to begin digging. This alerts the utilities to come out and mark the buried lines for free. Crews ask that you mark the area with white paint.

Every year, power outages are caused by people digging into buried power lines. Be safe and call 811 first.

What Information Should I Have Before Calling 811?

You will need the address of where you plan to dig, including county and nearest cross street. Be ready to explain the type of project you are completing and the exact area on the property where you are planning to dig.

What Happens Next?

Wait 2 business days so all utilities have a chance to respond to your request before breaking ground. Dig carefully around the marked utility lines and consider relocating projects that are too close to buried lines.

The portion of any lines on your property is your responsibility to locate.
